part one
in 2005, i met this kid todd, who thought (thinks) the state of oregon was (is) the shiz. (he spent the first 19 years of his life there, and if you ask me that is a very limited range of experience that couldn't possibly result in a well-formed opinion.) until then, i had given little to no thought to oregon. i lived in washington once upon a time, and i loved it there. i thought oregon was basically washington plus hippy parades and birkenstocks. or that place your wagon party ended if your oxen hadn't all died.
then i actually went to oregon. and i loved oregon. the weather was perfect, it seemed greener, more open, less populated, all-around better than its northerly neighbor. and i could maybe live the rest of my days in portland, or in pacific city, or in astoria (i've never been, but am thoroughly convinced i would adore it). and maybe i think the hippies are awesome.

part two
sometime circa 1994, i became completely enamored with kidpix. one day, dad brought home a very square, heavy, off-white apple computer (with CD drive!) on which i could kidpix my little heart out. and since that day, i have been a mac girl. everything mac makes me smile. i love the branding, the ads, the design, the stores, the hardware, the apps, the OS, the geekiness.
todd said he didn't want to buy macs because they're expensive and a lot of programs don't work on them. i told him i might cry if i didn't have a mac. he did not understand.
then we started watching past seasons of the office on my macbook, because of its superior battery power and picture quality. a few days later, todd asked to use my laptop instead of his because mine doesn't overheat and shut down.
and then today, todd told me he would like to buy an ipod. (yes, i'm sure! i made him repeat!)
---
conclusion
todd's still working on getting me to stay awake through any of the lord of the rings movies. i'm still trying to impress upon him the importance of recycling the aluminum cans. but i don't get mad when he watches sportscenter first thing in the morning. and he requested the organic orange juice last week.
the future is looking bright.

haha, I heart this post. what a great way of bringing across the compromise idea - and proving that it works!
