This weekend was "Darden Days," an event for newly admitted students to check out the campus, experience the program, and meet current students and faculty. We went to a gorgeous vineyard in Crozet for a BBQ Friday night. I told Todd if he ends up working in Charlottesville for the long term, Crozet is where I'd like to live. I think he's convinced now. Of course the nighttime iPhone photo doesn't do it justice... this place is beautiful.
Todd also lost his wedding ring.
He was tossing the football with some of the other LDS guys on the lawn while I was talking to the wives. The witnesses said he made an amazing catch... at the expense of his ring, which slipped off his finger and onto the lawn as he dove. The grass was the mangiest, tangliest grass I have ever seen. Four of us scoured the little field for 15 minutes and didn't find it.
Todd claims I am not nostalgic, but I am. I am nostalgic about different things than he is, and one of those things is his wedding ring. So I drove all around town on Saturday trying to rent a metal detector to take back to the vineyard and find it. And I was dead set on going back to look for it right away.
The forecast called for very heavy rain, but I had been out all day and it wasn't too bad. So we packed in the car and started the 20-minute trip to the vineyard. About 10 minutes in, we hit the absolute worst rain I have ever seen in my life. I literally could not see in front of the car. Turns out there was a tornado warning, too. Oops.
When we got to the dirt road leading to the vineyard, several streams had flooded their banks and the road was totally washed out. I was ready to ford the river on foot, we were just a few hundred yards away. But Todd said no way, and we went home.
So after the rainstorm of the century, what are the odds we would find his ring? We went back today to look again. The people there for the polo match most certainly thought we were batty, crawling all over the side yard with a metal detector and pulling up the grass. And it was to no avail--the ring was nowhere to be found.
Thank goodness the company we bought it from still carries the exact same ring. I've already ordered a replacement, but I am sad that it won't be the same ring Todd wore when we got married. RIP, ring.
Todd was in the doghouse for about five minutes. I mean, I can understand the value of sacrificing for a great catch. Plus, he's really cute with our primary kids.

90% of guys loose their ring within the first year of marriage... so you guys did really well! :) It happens, doesn't make it easier though cause I am super sentimental as well with stuff like that. (good story though! hee hee I can just see you out there with your metal detector!) Love you!
That is CRAZY! You are pretty passionate about that ring for going to such extremes. But if we ever lose our wedding rings I know who to call! :)
That is an awesome story!
Haha, this story makes me laugh. Especially the last comment. I know what you mean about the ring though. When Paul and I got married we had apparently purchased a style for Paul that was going to be discontinued so the jeweler decided that we didn't want our ring and didn't order it. I went to pick it up the day before our wedding and found that we had no ring. We ended up having to get a replacement ring that we returned once his came in and so all of our wedding pictures have the wrong ring in them. We're going to get family pictures done this summer and I think I'm going to have her take a few pictures of our hands/rings just so I have a few shots with the real thing.
Tyson totally lost his ring a few years ago, but we had no idea where! He just noticed it was missing and the last time he remembered seeing it was several hours earlier. About three months later though, we found it in the lawn outside our apartments. Totally weird. So there may still be hope. :) It would be totally hilarious seeing you with a metal detector. I love the pictures of you and your family too!
